Stories from a range of cultures. Read a selection of African and Indian stories. Look at repeated language and discuss the settings. How is it different from our culture?  Choose one of the stories to write a different ending. Look at Handa’s Surprise as a format for repeated story language. Look at clothing, where they live, transport. Compare to Iron Acton.

Develop sorting skills-sort animals into groups and explain how you sorted them. Understanding one more than/one less than a number. Santa’s on the washing line. What number is missing? Tea party for Lion King animals. Are there enough cups/saucers? How many plates? Begin to learn shape names and properties. Make a xmas picture using shapes, Which container holds the most?, Order the Santa’s by position first, second, third, Count the buttons on the Santa’s? Who has the most buttons?, Count in 2s. 2 baubles, then another 2. 2, 4, 6, 8. Santa has lost his presents. Can you go and hunt for them around the school looking at the clues. Write and say what number is on each present. Have a selection of wrapped presents. How can we find which present is the heaviest? Use a balance. Can you find a present heavier/lighter than that one? Tell a story of how some children built a snowman. Put the cards in order. Make wrapping paper-Check it is a pattern. Solving problems – Santa has 10 houses to visit but only 9 presents. How many more does he need? I have hidden 2 presents in the sack and have 3 presents on the table. How many presents altogether? I have 6 presents in the sack. I take 4 of them out. How many are left? Sort Santa’s into categories. E.g. ones with a black belt, yellow belt. Make a belt for Santa-Problem solving measuring.

 

Y1- Problem solving involving counting and measuring. Questions in box-Pass the parcel. Questions about days of the week, seasons, birthdays. Measuring-Measure Santa following instructions on how tall he needs to be. Capacity-filling containers. How many cups to fill this bottle?

Weighing presents. Measuring the wrapping paper to fit the present that needs wrapping. Buy toys in the shop and give change from 10p and 20p. Using a hundred square for counting in tens. Counting in 2s. Pairs of presents. Doubling presents/halving them. Making chapatti bread. Can you cut it into half/quarters? Problems using snowmen using addition and subtraction.
